Obsessive manga fans dress up as the characters, decorate their cars and get tattoos inspired by the Japanese comic books, and the cult has a new foothold in Palmerston North.

The Japanese-founded Institute of the Pacific United, a tertiary training institute in Palmerston North, has just received its largest shipment of manga.
This boosts the IPU library’s collection to about 1400 titles, head librarian Mojgan Sadighi said – thought to be New Zealand’s largest public collection.

Auckland public library has just over 200, Sadighi said, and she is doubtful any private collections in New Zealand would be as big.
The comics are well-used by both students from Japan, and those learning Japanese.
“They get quite passionate about it, which is what we want to see – we’re hoping to draw more interest from the public to the collection here, especially young people learning Japanese.
オークランドの図書館でも200タイトル強しかないので、おそらく、IPU New Zealandくらいのコレクションがある図書館は他にはないでしょう、ということでした。

IPU students commonly decorate their rooms with manga posters and badges.
Sam Dyer is studying Japanese at IPU and said manga were a big conversation topic on campus, and widely talked about in Japan where they are read by all ages.
“It can be about anything – like cooking, it’s not specific, and adults will read the kids ones.”
IPU New Zealandでも部屋を漫画のポスターやバッジで飾っている学生がたくさんいます。
IPU New Zealandで日本語を学んでいる Sam Dyerさんいわく、キャンパスでは漫画が頻繁に話題になっていて、また日本でも年代を問わず漫画が読まれていて、人々の話題になることも多いそうです。
In Japan pornographic and ultra-violent manga were read on the subway without anyone blinking an eyelid, he said, but this was a particular genre among a wide range of styles.
Dyer spent time working in a konbini (convenience store) in Japan, and his favourite manga series is about a konbini worker.
“Nii-chan Sensei says how annoying the customers are, and what they have to do at night.”

Laura Wright, who is also studying Japanese, liked Skip Beat, a shoujo manga, a genre known for its “prettier” artwork.
However shoujo was usually “a lot of girl meets guy and then someone else appears, and drama”, so most people liked the shounen genre, she admitted.
Friends Wright had introduced to manga had got hooked, despite some early, common misconceptions.
“Some people consider it nerdy or for kids, but it’s so not just for kids.”
同じく日本語を勉強している Laura Wrightさんは「スキップビート」という少女マンガが好きだそうです。
少女マンガというのは、絵が可愛く描かれている漫画のジャンルです。
しかし、少女マンガはほとんど、“女の子が男の人と付き合っていると他の子が現れて、で・・・話が展開 “というパターンだったので、ほとんどの人が少年漫画の方を好むのは認めつつ、彼女は少女漫画に惹かれたそうです。
Wrightさんが漫画を紹介した友達たちも、最初は少女漫画に対して、よくある誤解をしていましたが、最後はハマったそうです。
IPU community liaison and alumni Joseph Rush said students who read manga often developed better kanji skills, and understood popular references and jokes.
“The key to get really good at a language is to make it part of your life and get as much exposure as you can.
“If you can make it part of your leisure, you’ll get even more.”
大学の卒業生でもあり、広報担当Joseph Rush さんの話では、漫画をよく読む学生の方が漢字の読み書きがよくできて、はやりやジョークなどもよく理解できるようです。
「語学の上達への鍵は、言葉を自分の生活の一部に取り入れ、できる限り触れることです」
「もし趣味の中に取り入れることができれば、もっと上達します」
